“My glory I will not give to another” : Israel, like all men, had “exchanged the glory of God” for idols (see Romans 1:23). If the heart of man is ‘an idol-making factory’, we should pray with the hymn writer and search our hearts:
“The dearest idol I have known,
Whate’er that idol be,
Help me to tear it from Thy throne
And worship only Thee.”
There is no end to the potential for idols: materialism, illicit sex, selfish ambition are the obvious ones. More subtle is the addiction to wanting recognition, to finding our self worth in ‘ministry’, to make our work for God more important than our relationship with God.
“Little children, keep yourselves from idols.” (1 John 5:21)
