After centuries of silence, with no prophetic voice heard, there is mention in Luke’s account of the activity of the Holy Spirit. He stirs two humble women, cousins Elisabeth and Mary, both pregnant miraculously-though Mary’s is a Virgin Conception. Elisabeth makes a prophetic statement and Mary breaks into prophetic song, with themes reminiscent of Hannah’s prayer (1 Samuel 2).
God’s mercy (v.50,54) and the fulfillment of His promises dominate the song, with an indication of “The Upside Down Kingdom” of Jesus where the poor are filled and the rich sent away empty.
God’s Coming in Christ is Good News to the poor, to the hopeless, the helpless. He makes the weak strong, the poor become rich, the humble are exalted. And He fulfills His promises – as He will do for you.
