The thrust of his prophecy is the fulfillment of God’s promises; with the dominant emotion of God’s mercy – “the mercy shown to our fathers” (v.72) and “the tender mercy of our God,” (v.78) “whereby the sunrise from on high has visited us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death.”
