Simeon blesses Joseph and Mary, then speaks directly to Mary about the pain that she will feel. For He recognises that the Servant of the Lord is also the Suffering Servant: Jesus will be ” a sign that is spoken against.” Hence, he says to Mary, “and a sword shall pierce your own soul also.”
Mary will have to look on as Her Son will be subject to all kind of accusations: of madness ( Mark 3:21 ), of blasphemy, of breaking the Sabbath, of not respecting traditions etc. Eventually she witnessed His crucifixion. Simeon has prepared her. Sometimes the news or message that we have to give will not be easy or palatable. This should not deter us, for these were wise words from a godly, responsible, old man.
